An Introduction To Writing Poetry

Level - Beginner

Writing poetry is a wonderfully creative way to express your emotions, thoughts, and the full range of human experience.

Through poetry, you can explore language and test its boundaries in ways that aren’t possible with ordinary prose.

So, where do you begin? To newcomers, poetry can seem mysterious or even intimidating. But by learning a few simple techniques, you can start to write poems you’ll be proud to share.

This course will guide you through the essentials of writing poetry helping you to find your voice, craft your first poems, and discover the joy of the creative process.

Your Course

Module One suggests some themes you may want to explore. Then you are given ways to generate ideas to write about. You look at two different methods to write a poem before attempting your first piece.

In Module Two you are introduced to different forms of poetry so you can start to play with your ideas in a variety of ways.

Module Three takes you through some of the common poetry techniques poets have in their writing toolbox.

In Module Four you’ll think about how sentences are constructed to convey a thought and add variety as well as interest to your work.

Finally, in Module Five, you will think about autobiographical poems, poetry landscapes and giving your poems a sense of place.

Exercises And Assignments

You are given optional exercises throughout so you can try the concepts being studied. Plus, you have one assignment giving you the chance to send in your poems for feedback from Mandy herself.
