Pitching Your Book To Publishers And Agents

Suitable for those who are pitching their book for the first time or keep getting rejected.

Pitching your book to agents or publishers means you'll need to write a synopsis and cover letter. You then send these, together with the opening chapters of your book.

But, writing a synopsis isn’t easy. How do you cram the essence of your whole book into just a few words and still make it compelling to read? If you don’t know where to start and dread writing one, you’re not alone. Many authors dislike having to produce them. In the first module, we’ll take the fear of writing one away and look at how to structure your synopsis, everything you need to include and how you can make it stand out and catch a publisher or agent’s eye.

The synopsis is often seen as the most important part of pitching your book, but the cover letter is the first thing the publisher or agent sees. That means it needs to be good, otherwise they might not even get to your synopsis before moving on to another submission. The second module focuses on how to ensure your cover letter hooks their attention and makes them keen to read your synopsis.

There will be examples for you to follow, together with some exercises for you to work through, before you complete two assignments.

By the end of the course, you should feel more confident about writing your synopsis and cover letter and sending it out to publishers and agents.

For the duration of your course you will have access to The Writers Bureau's Writers' Community and free Zoom sessions where you can meet other writers and ask questions.

If you want to learn how to get an agent or publisher interested in your book this course is for you.
