Workshop Leader

Esther Chilton

Since joining The Writers Bureau as a student in 1999, and following their advice, Esther hasn’t looked back. As well as winning several writing competitions herself, she was head judge of Writers’ Forum magazine’s monthly short story competition. Over the years, Esther has regularly had articles and short stories published in a variety of newspapers and magazines in the UK and abroad. She has published a range of writing workbooks, children’s books and short story collections.

Esther became a tutor for The Writers Bureau in 2009 and when they closed in July 2026, she knew she wasn’t ready for it to go. Fortunately, they let her continue with the website and new courses so she can support students on their writing journey.

Workshop Outline

Week 1: Introducing the Senses In the first session, you'll learn about how the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste) can bring your writing to life and take your reader right to the scene. There will be some writing exercises so you can start creating vivid scenes.

Week 2: Using Description in Stories We'll now move on to how you can use your descriptive skills in story writing. It's important not to overdo it as the story can become lost. But a few uses of the senses, dotted here and there, can make your reader feel involved in your story. You'll have the opportunity to put this into practice.

This workshop is run by Esther Chilton T/as The Writers Bureau.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • meet other writers

  • have time to ask questions as there are only ten participants per group

  • learn how to use your senses effectively in story telling

  • the chance to complete exercises to improve your technique

  • gain increased self-confidence to take your writing forward on your own.

  • Learn how to create the perfect backdrop for your story

  • Improve you powers of description

  • A maximum of ten people

  • Notes emailed to you after each session
