Workshop Leader

Workshop Leader Jo van de Borgh

Jo van der Borgh grew up in South East London and spent most of her holidays on the Atlantic coast of South West Ireland in walking boots and boats. She has always had a passion for nonsense poetry and moral tales and when her job in the commercial world of property lost its appeal she packed it in to pursue a Masters in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature at Kingston University. She loves playing with language and will always find inspiration in the wild scenery of Ireland which she has since introduced to her husband and two children and continues to visit every year. Jo still lives in Greater London and is very excited to be publishing her first picture book with a friend from school, the wonderfully talented illustrator, Jo Beasley.

Workshop Outline

Week One: Jo will introduce you to the real world of having a picture book published, who is involved and timescales. You'll then look at the structure of a picture book and consider characters, plot and setting for your book. You'll then start to create a character of your own.

Your homework: Developing your character for the next session.

Week Two: You'll start this session by sharing your character (if you want to). You'll explore story lines that don't work and learn what a publisher and agent are looking for in a manuscript. You'll look at some different plots and themes that you could use for your book. You'll learn about the importance of using the right language to make your text sing and why rhyme may not be your best option. You'll have some exercises to complete to get you started on your own picture book.

This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • meet other writers on the same journey as you

  • have time to ask questions

  • learn how agents and publishers work for picture books

  • be given exercises to develop a character and make a start on your book

  • gain increased self-confidence to take your writing forward on your own.
