Workshop Outline

In this workshop you'll start by looking at some history around Section 28, book bans etc. to help you understand why representation matters in fiction. You'll then move onto why getting representation right is important.

Next you take a look at at LGBTQ+ identities including both sexualities and gender identities. You then get to look at how to create authentic LGBTQ+ characters.

Finally you will be given an overview of the role of the authenticity reader and how they can help you avoid making faux pas of one kind or another.

This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • meet other writers

  • have time to ask questions as there are only ten participants per group

  • learn why representation matters in fiction

  • find out the difference between sexuality and gender identity

  • gain increased self-confidence to take your writing forward on your own.
