Plan and Pitch a Non-Fiction Book

Three-session online workshop, 1 - 1.5 hours per session, live teaching, via Zoom.

The length of the sessions varies depending on the session topic and the questions and discussions that arise. Sessions will be a minimum of one hour.

Workshop Outline

Week 1: Where To Start. In your first session you'll learn about the market of non-fiction books, where to find ideas for a book, how to research the market, approaching publishers and agents and how to come up with an eye-catching title.

Week 2: The Next Step. In your second session you'll learn how to write your synopsis, pick a publisher and who to avoid, about contracts and marketing. You'll also look at self-publishing, sourcing illustrations and photos, as well as how to interview experts.

Week 3: What Else To Include. In your final session you'll learn how to liven up your writing using case histories and interview experts as well as what to include in the bibliography, acknowledgements, forward and introduction. Finally, you'll receive some pointers on how to market yourself and your book.



This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.

Workshop Leader

Diane Paul

Diane is a former Writers Bureau tutor. She has worked in TV journalism, had by-lined columns in local newspapers and features in national newspapers and magazines. She has written four non-fiction books, two of which won awards and has a Master’s Degree in TV & Radio Scriptwriting. Diane, who runs Keyword Editorial Services, has taught creative writing for the Open College of the Arts and Writers’ News and run workshops in secondary schools.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • find out how to check there is a market for your book

  • learn how to find the publishers and agents you should pitch to

  • learn how to write a synopsis

  • gain increased self-confidence to do your own marketing
