If you want to become a published writer then researching your market is essential. It’s not the glamorous side of writing but you do have to do it. Esther takes you step-by-step through the process of finding and analysing potential markets to give you a thorough understanding of what to look for and a checklist to help you speed up the process.
Week 1: Where To Start. Market research is the bane of every writer. No one enjoys it, but if you want to become a published writer, it’s essential. It’s no good writing a story or article and then sending it off to a publication you haven’t even looked at. How do you know what type of story they publish, or even if they publish fiction? Similarly, without looking at the publication carefully, do you know that you’ve written an article of the right length? Does the publication even accept articles from freelance writers?
It's not easy to know where to start. The first session will give you some ideas about finding markets you’d like to write for and guide you through the beginning of the research process.
Homework: You will need to choose a publication you’d like to write for and get hold of a copy to analyse in week two.
Week 2: Analysing Your Chosen Publication. Session two will show you how to analyse one of the publications you’d like to write for. You’ll be given a step-by-step guide and we’ll work through it together. By the end of the session, you should have a good grasp of what the publication is looking for, who the reader is you’re writing for and some writing ideas to start working on. You’ll then be able to carry this forward into your future writing and have more confidence in carrying out market research.
