Workshop Leader

Esther Chilton

Since joining The Writers Bureau as a student many years ago, Esther hasn’t looked back and now writes and tutors full-time. She regularly has articles and short stories published in a variety of newspapers and magazines in the UK and abroad, ranging from The Guardian, to The People’s Friend, to Writing Magazine. As well as winning writing competitions herself, Esther has judged many, including Writers’ Forum magazine’s monthly short story competition. She is currently working with a publisher on a range of non-fiction books on writing.

Workshop Outline

It’s a fantastic achievement to write a book and self-publish it, but once it’s out there in the world, how do you get readers to know about it? Whatever you think about it, social media can bring you readers. You may already have Facebook and/or X, Instagram, Threads, etc. That’s great. It means you will hopefully already have an audience of people who will want to buy your book. But you need to nurture and build this, posting regularly and also taking an interest in others’ posts.

If you can start a marketing campaign before your book is published, for example through pre-orders, blog tours and a cover reveal, you’ll be off and running before your launch date.

The session will look at the role of social media, creating an audience for your book before its released and other marketing tools such as having an eye-catching website, creating a mailing list, newsletter and blogging, building up to making short videos for TikTok/BookTok.

During the workshop we’ll also cover how you can gain book reviews and why they’re important, as well as how being a guest on other websites/blogs and participating in online forums and book-related communities can make a big difference.

This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.
