Week 1: First There are the Rules –
In this session you will examine the best ways to go about writing the three most commonly used points of view in contemporary fiction: first-person, third-person limited, and third-person omniscient. Understanding the rules will help you write stories that will keep your readers engaged.
At the end of this session, you will be asked to submit a short piece of writing (up to 500 words), showing your understanding of one of these point of view options.
Week 2: Then There’s Jazz –Clarity and consistency are essential in the telling of any story. But sometimes, if you want to show a particular aspect of someone’s character, share a specific piece of information, reveal a truth masked by an unreliable narrator, or simply get our readers back on their toes, the best strategy is to throw the rule book out of the window and shake things up a bit. Just like in music, painting, theatre or cinema, once you know storytelling’s rules, you can start breaking them. And doing this with confidence can give your work subtle tones impossible to achieve within the letter of the law.
So, in this second session, you will look at ways to drift between third-person omniscient and third-person limited narration; how to move from omniscient to first-person; to write from multiple first-person points of view, and even how to head-hop from one character to another within a single scene without throwing readers out of a story.
At the end of this session, you will be asked to submit another short piece (up to 1,000 words), this time including a shift from one narrative point of view to another.
This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.
