  • How to choose a great setting to enhance your story

  • Add metaphorical meaning to your story through the setting

  • A maximum of ten people

  • Notes emailed to you after each session

Workshop Outline

Setting is so much more than the background to a narrative. Imaginatively used, it brings atmosphere and colour. It can also add a layer of metaphor which will enhance the meaning of your story. You will learn how it can involve the wider social and political environment. Not least, we will explore how a dynamic use of setting can move your story forward as much as your characters do.

TOPICS COVERED

  • Optimising the feel of your story with the right choice of setting.
  • Using setting to add metaphorical meaning.
  • Setting as an enhancer and mover of plot.

This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.

Workshop Leader

Tony’s short stories have appeared in numerous publications and have been awarded or shortlisted for prizes. He has also contributed articles for The Independent, Writing Magazine, and many other newspapers and magazines. In an earlier life his comedy sketches were broadcast on UK and European TV and radio. His non-fiction book “How To Write Comedy” was cited by The Stage newspaper as the training book of the year.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • meet other writers

  • have time to ask questions as there are only ten participants per group

  • explore how to use setting to move your story forward

  • learn how to enhance the meaning of your story with the setting you choose

  • gain increased self-confidence to take your writing forward on your own.
