Workshop Leader

Esther Chilton

Since joining The Writers Bureau as a student many years ago, Esther hasn’t looked back and now writes and tutors full-time. She regularly has articles and short stories published in a variety of newspapers and magazines in the UK and abroad, ranging from The Guardian, to The People’s Friend, to Writing Magazine. As well as winning writing competitions herself, Esther has judged many, including Writers’ Forum magazine’s monthly short story competition. She is currently working with a publisher on a range of non-fiction books on writing.

Workshop Outline

The blurb is the text that goes on the back of your book. Its purpose is to hook a potential reader’s attention and entice them into wanting to buy the book. So you’ve got to make it exciting. It’s also short – generally up to 200 words, but often much shorter, so you need to write succinctly.

If you’re self-publishing your book, you’ll need to write your own blurb. But, even if you’re looking to gain a traditional publisher, you may be asked to write a blurb for your book.

In this session, we’ll look at some examples and why they’re effective, before breaking the blurb down and looking at its structure, what you need to include, and how you can make yours compelling.

This workshop is run by Budding Writers in partnership with The Writers Bureau.

By taking part in this workshop you will:

  • meet other writers

  • have time to ask questions as there are only ten participants per group
